Providing specialized instruction and therapeutic services to students identified in the area of Autism and/or related educational disabilities

Description and Philosophy

The ASD Programs at Hampstead Central School provides specialized instruction and therapeutic services for students identified in the areas of Autism and/or related educational disabilities.

Program curricula align with the District's curriculum and are modified as appropriate, dependent on the details of the students' Individual Education Programs (IEPs).

Specialized instruction is based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) utilizing Discrete Trial Training (DTT), social pragmatics and other research-based methodologies. Our programs incorporate a collaborative, interdisciplinary team approach across various school settings designed to promote the acquisition, generalization and maintenance of skills.

Educational activities in our programs promote cognitive, communication, daily living, motor and social skills development.  The curriculum follows a developmental progression and is taught through discrete trial and incidental/natural learning opportunities.   Inclusion opportunities in the general education setting are provided in accordance with the students’ IEPs. Behavioral supports may take the form of staff consultation, parent consultation or direct intervention with a Behavior Specialist.

Related Services

Related services, such as occupational therapy or speech therapy are delivered in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). Delivery of these services takes place in the respective therapy room, in the ASD room,  or in the general school environment. Individual needs dictate the appropriate location. In addition to direct teaching, therapists provide consultation to promote the practice and transfer of skills across all learning environments.
